Accessibility

Last updated: {{DATE}}

This page is specific rather than reassuring. Vague accessibility statements help nobody.

The ebook

  • Tagged PDF with a full document structure tree, so screen readers can navigate it.
  • Document language is set.
  • Every text and background pair meets WCAG AA contrast (4.5:1). Two colours failed on first draft and were changed, not waived.
  • Smallest text is 7.6pt; it was raised from 7.1pt specifically for legibility.
  • Diagrams are described in words as well as drawn.
  • No information is carried by colour alone — every coloured component also carries a text label.

The audiobook

The audiobook exists so the material is usable without reading 108 pages. It is written to stand on its own: it never says "as you can see above", every diagram is described as a sequence in words, and every track states its subject in the first fifteen seconds.

The narration scripts are plain text and can be supplied as transcripts on request.

This website

  • Semantic HTML with a logical heading order.
  • Keyboard navigable, with visible focus indicators.
  • A skip link as the first tab stop.
  • Audio controls are real form controls, reachable by keyboard, and never autoplay.
  • No interactive target smaller than 44 pixels.
  • Works at 200% zoom and on small screens without horizontal scrolling.

Where we fall short

The audiobook uses synthetic narration. Some listeners find synthetic voices harder to follow than human ones over long periods.

The PDF worksheets are designed to be printed and filled in by hand. They are readable by a screen reader but they are not fillable form fields.

We have tested with automated tools and manual keyboard navigation, but not yet with a broad range of assistive technology users.
